Chart Correction System Background Information The  Chart/Publication  Correction  Record  Card  System  is  used  to conserve  nautical  charts  and  publications  and  to  reduce  the  amount  of chart  correction  work  aboard  ship.  The  Notice  to  Mariners,  Local Notice  to  Mariners,  Summary  of  Corrections,  NAVTEX  and  SafetyNet are  considered  component  parts  of  the  system. The  Chart/Publication  Correction  Record  Card,  shown  in  figure  1-17,  is designed  for  use  in  recording  all  Notice  to  Mariners  corrections  affecting charts  and  publications  held  on  board.  Initially,  the  cards  are  furnished to  Navy  ships.  Additional  cards  may  be  ordered  from  DMAODS.  With this  record,  only  the  charts  and  publications  of  the  operating  area  need be  corrected  (ready  charts). Charts  and  publications  not  immediately  required  for  use  may  be updated  as  areas  of  operations  change  or  as  directed  by  the  commanding officer.  A  record  must  be  maintained  for  Notice  to  Mariners  corrections to  all  charts  and  publications  carried  aboard,  with  actual  corrections being  made  on  all  charts  and  publications  before  they  are  used  for navigational  purposes.  Never  use  an  uncorrected  chart  for  navigation purposes.
