the LHD. Both the LHD and the LHA carry NATO
Sea Sparrow missiles and the 20-mm Vulcan
Phalanx close-in weapon system (CIWS).

designed to embark, transport, and land marines
by means of transport helicopters is the Iwo Jima
class (fig. 19-1 2). When not used in an amphibious
role, LPHs have the capability of assisting in
antisubmarine warfare.
