Visibility of Lights Information The  visibility  of  a  lighted  ATON  depends  upon  two  factors:  the  light’s intensity  and  the  light’s  height  above  water.  There  will  be  times  when you  will  want  to  know  the  specific  distance  at  which  you  will  be  able  to see  a  light,  such  as  approaching  land  from  sea.  This  information  can  be helpful  in  determining  the  ship’s  position. Rule:    When a ship is under way all navigational lights that will be sighted  during  periods  of  darkness  must  be  identified  in  the  Captain’s Night  Orders.  It  is  desirable  to  also  define  the  time  at  which  the  light should be sighted.
