Latitude and Longitude Information The  latitude  and  longitude  scales  presented  on  the  chart  are  broken  down into  whole  degrees  (fig.  1-11).  Each  degree  is  usually  broken  down  into minutes  on  small-scale  charts  (remember,  small  scale  =  large  area.)  The large-scale  chart  breaks  down  even  further  into  minutes  (')  and  seconds ("). It is important that you understand these scales. Remember  that  each  degree  (°)  of  latitude  or  longitude  equals  60  minutes (60'),  and  that  each  minute  (1')  equals  60  seconds  (60").  Seconds  of latitude  and  longitude  may  also  be  expressed  as  a  decimal  fraction.
